The Thankful Project: Day 28

Day 28: Free Day

Happy Thanksgiving!! I'm so excited to go through this holiday season as a married woman! Wooo!
Today's prompt is a free day so I can write about anything I want.... I have so many things that I can write about but I think I will be very general. I am thankful for my life. God has truly blessed my family and I. We had a rough couple of years with my mom being sick, grandpa passing, step dad filing for divorce, him backing out of paying for my wedding then having him and my sister completely throwing us out of the house. Sounds worse than I think it really was and I'm not telling everyone so you can feel sorry for us. I am truly thankful that God has really blessed my brother, mom, Kyle and  I.
Right after the divorce happened, we got a new wedding venue in a beautiful backyard for free, my brother got a truck given to him by my best friend, my mom found a house to rent that is perfect for her and my brother, and Kyle and I we're able to move into this little house next to his grandparents after the wedding. Now the Lord's blessings just keep on pouring out on us and we couldn't be more thankful.

I'm also thankful to Kenzie at Chasing Happy for making this Thankful Project! It was such an awesome idea and really made me realize how blessed I am.

Hope everybody has a great day with family!

With love,
Kenzie Ann

The Thankful Project Day 22

Day 22: An Expectation

The expectation I am thankful for is being a wife.
I know I have a lot to learn still about being a good wife but I love this expectation. I feel like I am finally where I want to be in life. I get a best friend to share life with, I get to cook, clean, decorate, relax in my own house. Kyle and I can start our own traditions and do things our own way. Everything about being married and becoming a wife has been so awesome. Even though I'm only 21, I have never felt as though I was supposed to be in the stages of life that I have gone through. In Jr. High I was ready for high school, in high school (which I HATED) I was more than ready to get away from everybody and go to college.
Once I got to college (Kyle and I had been dating for about 6 months) I finally thought I was where I wanted to be and felt comfortable with the stage of life. Not too long, possibly a year later, I realized that my only true goal is to be a wife and mom. At the point, Kyle and I started talking about marriage and we got engaged probably 8 months later. I was ready to move along and be done with college and move along in the marriage journey. Well, I go to an ever so lovely Jr. College which I have been going to wayyyy too long and has now discouraged me from transferring to a university. The fact that I still am not graduated and we've been married for 5 months really is frustrating because I feel like I already met my goal of becoming a wife. What else do I want? The only thing that makes me want to finish school is the fact that once I finish I don't have to ever go back and I can be a full time wife and mom; oh and start working on my photography skills.
If staying home and raising a family means we have to cut back expenses and maybe I won't get the dream SUV I want, I'm more than ok with that. I have never heard a stay at home mom say she regretted her decision to stay home and watch her children grow up.
Anyways, I love being a wife. I am so thankful that God has blessed me with this expectation. I can't wait until I finish with school and am able to focus on being the best wife I can possibly be.

Does anybody else share my passion to just be a wife and mother?
How did it work out for you to stay home and raise a family?

With love,
Kenzie Ann

The Thankful Project Day 21

Day 21: Something that's easy to take for granted

This prompt is easy for me at this season of my life. As most of you know, if you've read previous posts, Kyle and I live in a little 1 bed, 1 bath house out in the country on an almond orchard. I love the location and the way of life out here but it took some getting used to.
Our house has a stove fireplace and a wall unit AC. When we got back from our honeymoon back in June, it was 100 degrees out. Our wall unit didn't work very well so it only got half of the front room cool enough to sit in. The rest of the house was just miserably hot. Thankfully Grandpa (he's our landlord too) got us a new wall unit and it got us through the rest of summer.
Now, with winter happening we have no heater just the fireplace which smokes out the house. (One day we'll get it working right.) It had been about 61 degrees in the house and I was so miserable so I begged Kyle to get a space heater. Thank God Grandpa had an extra and let us use it.
The other issue I had when moving here was the shower situation. The hot water for the whole house lasts for 10 minutes. That's it. For me this was like INSANE. I need hot water for at least 15-20 minutes. Oh and the shower is like a cave thing so it has no light. Seriously?? Not to mention there's NO BATHTUB! It's been torture for this slightly high maintenance girl but i've gotten over it..kinda ;)
I used to live in a brand-new house with a dishwasher(oh yeah don't have that either), plenty of hot water, AC/heater, a bathtub, and no light problems.
Can you tell its been work adjusting. I never realized how much I took for granted my tub and AC/heater. I am so thankful though for what the Lord has blessed us with though to manage these really minor annoyances: the new wall unit and our new space heater. Can't say much about our shower situation though ;)
All in all, it's not so bad out here and this little old house is starting to grow on me. I've been taught a lot of lessons lately about taking things for granted. I think that's kinda what the Lord does for us to teach us, or maybe just me. He brings me out of my comfort zone to make me see what's really important in life and to be thankful for what I do have. I also look back at my Africa pictures and can remember that the Lord has really blessed us and I need to appreciate everything, even the small things that are easy to take for granted.

What little things have you been taking for granted?

With love,
Kenzie Ann

The Thankful Project: Day 12

Day 12: An Opportunity

When I first read the prompt for today. I immediatly thought of the opportunity of going to South Africa last year. It really was an amazing opportunity and I thank God for sending me because I truly didn't pay a cent towards the trip and was so impacted.
Then I thought about the Focus on the Family podcast that I just finished listening to while I was at the gym this morning. It was about a soldier in the Army, Scotty Smiley, who had to learn to walk by faith and not by sight. His story was incredible and his wife's testimony of how she dealt with their new journey was very touching. He was now completely dependent on his new wife of only 16 months and God. She could've divorced him after she finally saw what had happened to him while he was deployed in Iraq, but she remembered her vows that she had made; For better or for worse, in good times and in bad. I'm trying not to tell you all of their story because I really think everyone should listen to them speak.
Here's the link to the podcast.
Anyways, what she said and their story really touched me. I have been so blessed with the opportunity of marriage. Some people never get the opportunity to marry their best friend like I did at age 20. Sometimes I think of what some people tell me when they find out that I'm already married, like: you have so much to experience still, don't you want to date around more to see what other guys have to offer, why do you want to get tied down?.... I guess I can sorta see where those people are coming from if they have never had best friend who doubled as their spouse. I know though, that God is the one who writes my story. I prayed for a husband like Kyle since the beginning of high school. I told God that I didn't want to date around and I want the person I'm supposed to marry to be the only person I date.
God listened to my prayers and granted me the desires of my heart. When I think about Tiffany Smiley (Scotty Smileys wife), I think of what a trying time she had to go through but she chose to obey God and stick with her vows and stay by her husbands side. She had no idea how their new normal life would be like but she listened to God anyway.
Maybe one day I will have to make the same choice, I have no idea what God has written in my or my husband's story but I vowed to stay with him through good and bad, for better or worse. I'm really thankful that God has given my the opportunity of getting married to my best friend and I will love and cherish him all the days of my life.
With love,
Kenzie Ann

The Thankful Project: Day 9

Day 9: A Photo

There are so many photos that I am thankful for! How in the world do you pick just one?? I love pictures so much, especially old ones. I'm realizing that I need to print out all my pictures that I take now. What good are pictures that stay on your computer or phone?
Here are a couple of my favorites.

Mexico Missions 2010

Black Friday 2011

Hunting 2012

Yosemite 2012

 My Brother and I :)
 a random fishing trip..one of many ;)
Africa 2012
My momma and I in Santa Cruz 2011
The day I met Giada De Laurentis and bought my wedding dress in San Francisco with my momma
The day we got engaged!

Most of these don't seem like anything special but each picture holds a memory.
The reason why I am soon going into photography is because I long to capture those memories for others as well.
I challenge you to start taking more pictures when your out making memories and print a couple out. You'll be happy you did one day in 20 years when you are looking back and remembering the good 'ol days.  These days are the best days. Make memories that will last a lifetime.

With love,
Kenzie Ann

The Thankful Project: Day 8

Day 8: Words

Ok so I have two "words" or in my case books that I am thankful for. First is the bible. I didn't start getting into reading my bible until a couple of years ago. I never thought I would enjoy it and thought it was so old and boring. Then in high school, I started to have quiet times with the Lord reading his word. I started in the New Testament and read a chapter a night. Once I started to read, it was like God totally opened my eyes to his word and it felt like he was speaking to me. If you haven't started to have some quiet times with the Lord, I recommend getting a notebook, and open your bible to one of the gospels (Matt. Mark. Luke. John.) or James. I think I might have started with James. Its now one of my favorite books in the bible.
Once you read a chapter, write down a verse that stuck out to you. After I write down a few verses, I usually journal in the notebook or write down prayers. I like to look back at my journals and see what God was doing in my life at that time.

Ok so this is the Christy Miller Book Series. I read all of them when I was in high school. If your not a reader at all (like me) then at least give this books a shot. They're amazing!! These fiction books are so encouraging and not full of love/sex junk like other young love books. The series follows the main character Christy and her friends from age 14 till after college. They really teach girls what to do and not to do with love and friends. The christian message in them is just so refreshing. To have a fiction book talk about God in such a normal, not "preachy" way throughout the whole series is awesome.
I learned so much from these books. I can also say that because I started reading these books at age 15, I started to pray for my future husband. What book or movie or person for that matter, encourages  praying for someone you don't even know, but that's really what all young girls should do. I really can't say enough amazing things about this series and all of Robin Jones Gunn's books. PLEASEEEE check out the series at her website. I'll link it here. These books helped me through some tough teen angst. I'm so thankful that I came across them and that God really spoke through them.

Do you recommend any good book or have any words that you are thankful for?

With love,
Kenzie Ann

The Thankful Project: Day 7

Day 7: A Job

I'm thankful for all of the jobs that the Lord has provided for me, especially the one that I have now. One job in particular though, taught me more in the 11 months that I worked there, than any other. It was my preschool teaching job. The preschool that I worked at was my church's christian school. It was so amazing to have after school meetings that involved prayer and devotionals, teaching children about God all the time, reading the bible everyday in class, seeing scripture everywhere....etc. I loved the atmosphere not to mention the preschool program as well. My co-workers were also so awesome! I felt like I could tell them anything that I was struggling with and they would be right there to help and pray for me.
When God called me out of teaching and into working with children with Autism is was very nervous. I wasn't enjoying teaching anymore so I was ok with a position change but leaving my kids and co-workers was very hard. I definitely cried for a couple of hours when I got home on my last day. That job definitely helped shape me into who I am today. The experience of teaching 15 four year olds and growing closer to God while working is something I will always miss.

What job are you most thankful for?

With love,
Kenzie Ann

The Thankful Project: Day 6

Day 6: A failure

When I was in Jr. High I made the cheerleading squad at my school. I was incredibly shocked because I had never cheered or danced before. I was the very shy, soft spoken girl who wasn't exactly the most popular. I loved cheerleading and felt like I finally found something I'm good at. I was winning awards for it, making more friends and people at school were even telling me how great I was at it even though I didn't know them. It was awesome! I cheered for 2 years, then once high school cheer tryouts came, my, at the time, best friend and I tried out together. She hadn't cheered since she was a kid and I was just coming out of another year cheering. I worked so hard and memorized everything. Actually to be honest, I felt kinda bad for my friend because it seemed like she wasn't catching on as well as I had.

Well, the day came to tryout and I was confident. I tried out in front of the judges and didn't miss a beat. I was really happy walking out and couldn't wait to tell my mom how it went. When the judges mad their decisions the next day, I read the list and wasn't on it. But of coarse, guess who was...yep, my friend. So after loads of tears in the car, I called to congradualate her because I really was happy for her, but we were supposed to be on the squad together. I felt like my world was ending. I questioned God and wondered why he had given me this ability to dance and cheer then taken it from me. (It seems dramatic but to a 14 year old girl it's everything.)

When we started the school year at our high school we weren't friends anymore. She had her cheer friends and I went back to being that shy, christian girl who had aquaintences at school but only two real friends. I HATED high school with a passion.

In the spring of my freshman year I also tried out for softball just trying to do something new and I had played softball growing up as a child so I thought what the heck, I'll just see what happens. Maybe I didn't make cheer because I'm supposed to do softball. NOPE! I didn't make that team either.

This rejection didn't really surprise me as much but still stung a little.
That summer after my freshman year, we went to our local community pool and my mom talked to the lifeguards in the office about how they became a lifeguard and what training they had to go through. I was so determined to be a lifeguard. What a stinking cool job! I practiced strokes that summer in my neighbors pool (I had never had lessons and could barely swim about water well).

That next spring of my sophomore year I decided that if I was still going to become a lifeguard, I better join the swim team to get good for the test that I would have to take. Lucky for me, all you had to do to be on the team was come to the meeting and sign up. Easy enough. Turns out I actually got to be a pretty good swimmer and learned a lot. I finally felt like I fit in a little more in school too.

About a month after I joined the team I had to go to the lifeguard training. It was INTENSE. Thank God I joined that team or I would've been screwed. I got trained and certified. That summer I was working at that same community pool where I would work every summer for 6 years.

I'm so thankful that God closed the door to making that team. If he didn't, I would've never become a lifeguard and had 6 amazing summers by the pool with my new friends from work. I worked so much those first 2 summers there and saved up for my first car :) This past summer was my last one at the community pool and I think I'm happy to be moving on and working a year round job, but I will always remain friends with some of my co workers and have many many sweet memories of growing up at that pool. I've seen myself change so much from age 15-21 working at that pool and It taught me so much. I'm going to miss being in the water every day, tan skin, eating was too much candy in our snack bar, friday in-service which always turned into goofy scenarios, smelling like chlorine even after showering, natural sun highlight in my hair, killing flies in the office and making it a competition, and friday fun days with swim lesson kids.

God is so good. Sometimes we have to remember that when He closes one door, It doesn't mean He's not going to open two more different ones.
Are you thankful for any "failures"? I'd love to hear about it.

With love,
Kenzie Ann

The Thankful Project: Day 5

This morning while reading up on some blog post from some of my favorite bloggers, I ran across a blogger participating in The Thankful Project. This is so great because I've basically been doing the same thing! If you don't know what The Thankful Project is, I'll put a link to a fellow Kenzie's blog called Chasing Happy here :) So excited to be linking up with her and participate in this awesome project!

Ok so...Day 5: A talent you have.

Of coarse this would be the prompt I have to start with ;)
It has always been hard for me to acknowledge a talent that I have...But lately I have really been getting crafty!
Ever since I got married a couple of months ago and moved out of my parents house, I've just been able to do more DIY project because I have so much space to do them and nobody to tell me to be careful and not use certain things. It's so nice! haha
Some crafts that I'm really proud of would be my wedding decor, wreath, framed white board, painted dresser, and my cute burlap bulletin board in my kitchen :) Since I have only been here a couple of months I've only done a couple of projects and most I haven't taken pictures of just because I'm still saving for my DSLR camera. I REALLYYYY can't wait to start making Christmas DIY decor for my house and take pictures with the new camera because I'm almost ready to buy it!
Anyways, enough about the camera... I'm very thankful that the Lord has given me the ability to be crafty and resourceful. It's come in handy for my husband too because I'm not out buying things that I can just make myself ;D

Can't wait to share some more of my crafts!

With love,
Kenzie Ann
